EPA Budget News

From Mahnaz A. Tehrani, GRC chair:

I would like to share the following message that was sent by Mary Langman,
the coordinator of Information Issues and Policy of MLA. The message is only
informative, and no action is required. Here is the full PDF of the FY 2010 EPA Budget in Brief.

Dear GRC and Legislative Task Force Members:

Our Washington representatives–Health and Medicine Counsel of
Washington–report that on October 30, 2009, the President signed the
Department of the Interior, Environment and Related Appropriations bill for
fiscal year (FY) 2010 (PL 111-88). The bill provides $104.32 million for
IT/Data Management/Security, which is $5.3 million more than the FY 2009
level and $5 million below the budget request. The bill’s conference
agreement “directs that none of the reduction be taken from the amount
requested to restore and maintain the Agency’s library system.”

As many of you may be aware, EPA libraries reopened at the end of September
2008. Over the past year they put together a document that describes the
activities they’ve undertaken in reaction public comments to their access
strategy recommendations: See
http://www.epa.gov/nationaldialogue/index.html and
http://www.epa.gov/nationaldialogue/learn/currentactivities.pdf for more
information about this effort. MLA continues to work through HMCW, the
American Association of Law Libraries, and Special Libraries Association to
monitor this issue.
