On the Shoulders of Giants (1998)

To celebrate MLA’s Centennial Year, 1998, the NY-NJ Chapter of MLA sponsored a program of recognition and acknowledgement of librarians and friends who have shaped and influenced today’s medical librarians and Chapter members. Chapter members sponsored letters to be sent to someone who was a “giant” in their professional lives. The letter contained a quote from Bernard of Chartres:

We are like dwarfs on the shoulders of giants so that we can see more than they, and things at a greater distance not by virtue of any sharpness of sight on our part, or any physical distinction but because we are carried high and raised up by their giant size.
We thank the giants listed below for their support and encouragement. We truly do see more because we stand on their shoulders.
