Winifred Lieber (1919-2002),
Former Medical Librarian of Roosevelt Hospital



Winifred Lieber was born in New York City in 1919, received a bachelor's degree in English from NYU in 1940 (Phi Beta Kappa) and her MLS from Simmons in 1950. Miss Lieber served as a librarian from 1950 to 1962 in libraries that include the following: Veterans Administration Hospital, Hines, Ill; New York University College of Dentistry; New York Academy of Medicine; and Seton Hall College of Medicine, Jersey City, NJ.

Intelligent and alert, Miss Lieber was known for her dedicated efforts, working long hours for the betterment of the Roosevelt Hospital Medical Library from 1962 until 1984. She also was available to provide advice for librarians working in other libraries. After retiring from Roosevelt, she took on new responsibilities volunteering to head the library for the New York City Department for the Aging. For more than fifteen years she continued to make use of her many talents and abilities, working in her usual conscientious manner, assisting students and staff at the DFTA library.
