The NIH released a new (February 2012) document summarizing its public access policy. "WHAT IS AT STAKE UNDER THE PUBLIC ACCESS POLICY: Opening up to the public 90,000 new scientific articles each year reporting research that U.S. taxpayers have funded through NIH???s annual 32 billion dollar investment in biomedical research....HOW IT WORKS: The NIH policy honors, and is consistent with, U.S. copyright law. The author, as the creator of the work, holds the copyright in the original paper. The author gives NIH a non-exclusive right to distribute the paper in PMC and may transfer to the publisher the balance of his rights, including an exclusive copyright for the final published version of the paper....SUPPORT FROM PUBLISHERS:...Publishers representing about 1000 journals voluntarily submit the full content of their journals to PMC, regardless of whether the issue contains an article subject to the NIH Public Access Policy....NO HARM TO PUBLISHERS IS EVIDENT:...The Public Access requirement took effect in 2008. While the U.S. economy has suffered a downturn during the time period 2007 to 2011, scientific publishing has grown: [1] The number of journals dedicated to publishing biological sciences/agriculture articles and medicine/health articles increased 15% and 19%, respectively. [2] The average subscription prices of biology journals and health sciences journals increased 26% and 23%, respectively. [3] Publishers forecast increases to the rate of growth of the medical journal market, from 4.5% in 2011 to 6.3% in 2014...." Hello Network members,

Please excuse cross postings. This came across one of our regional
medical library lists, so I am forwarding to encourage hospital
librarians to complete this survey.

Getting librarians involved in emergency preparedness within the
institution and community is a strong effort for MAR. We will soon be
announcing year 2 request for proposals for projects to be funded May 1,
2012-April 30, 2013. Funding will be available for development of a
course aimed at developing skills in using disaster health-related
information resources to improve services during and after an
emergency. Funding will also be available for projects to partner
libraries with organizations needing health related information during
an emergency. Stay tuned!

Sincerely,
Renae Barger

Involvement

Please forgive the cross-posting! But do feel free to forward this on
to your hospital librarian colleagues through state or regional lists
(I've got Wisconsin covered) - I would very much appreciate it as I'm
trying to reach as many hospital librarians as humanly possible.

The objective of this survey is to look at whether hospital librarians
are actively involved in their organizations' emergency & disaster
preparedness activities and, if so, how. Some demographics will also be
captured. By exploring what roles currently exist and presenting these
findings in a poster at the 2012 Annual Medical Libraries Association
Conference in Seattle, WA, it is the author's hope that hospital
librarians can continue their involvement in this vital area and learn
from each other.

Disclaimer: This survey has been exempted from Institutional Review
Board oversight as the Aurora Health Care IRB has determined it does not
constitute human subject research. Results will be kept confidential and
presented only in aggregate. Any personally identifiable information
provided (optional) will be disassociated from responses and will only
be used by the author to follow up on individual disaster/emergency
experiences.

Survey deadline: Wednesday, February 29th, 2012 (11:59pm, CST). The
survey should take 5-15 minutes to complete, depending on the depth of
your responses.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Subject: Open Call - Chapter News for May Edition of MLA News

Good afternoon,

I am again searching for submissions for the Chapter News column of MLA News. As a reminder, this column highlights recent events and news from individual MLA chapters that may be of interest to other MLA members.

If anything newsworthy has taken place involving your chapter during the last few months, I encourage you to share! Any member or group of members from your chapter can submit an article, so please let other members know about this opportunity. Articles must be about recent events and under 700 words in length. More detailed submission guidelines are available at: http://mlanet.org/publications/mlanews/.

As always, I will gladly accept all submissions, but will only be able to publish relevant content on a first-come, first-served basis. Submissions not used for the May issue may be used for future issues of MLA News. All submissions are subject to editing and abridgement. Thank you for your understanding.

If your chapter would like to submit an article for the May edition of MLA News, the deadline is March 15, 2012. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you for your time, and I hope to hear from your chapter!
