Historical Note:

The New York Regional Group, the predecessor organization of the chapter, was organized in 1951. Its documents were passed from committee to committee. In 1987-88, Pamela Kerns during her term as chapter chair appointed an archives committee which began to organize our documents, photographs and artifacts. Barbara Niss, the archivist at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine and Hospital, reviewed the collection and wrote the guidelines for its management. Members of the Chapter maintained the Archives. Judith Topper based her history of the Chapter on its documents.

In 1993, a serious backlog had developed. Arsenia Q. Avetria of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center as Chair of the committee proposed the employment of a professional archivist; she also developed the budget to come to grips with the backlog and to plan the reorganization of the archives.

Kathleen A. Moeller, Chair 1993-1994, and the board implemented the plan and provided the funds. Carla Tobias, a certified archivist who had organized the Archives of HSLANJ (Health Sciences Library Association of New Jersey), was appointed as part-time archivist of our collection. The arrangement and the finding list is her effort.
